Moorings: the complete guide to choosing and maintaining your mooring lines

Why are mooring lines important? Mooring lines are essential for safety on board. They enable you to moor your boat safely to a quay, pontoon or deadweight. Choosing the right mooring lines depends on several factors: the size of your boat, the conditions of use (sea, lake, river), the frequency of use and your budget.

What criteria should you take into account when choosing a mooring line?

- Length: Generally speaking, we recommend at least two mooring lines 1.5 times the length of your boat and two others the exact length of the boat.

- Diameter: The diameter is directly related to the strength of the mooring line. A rule of thumb exists: Polyester: boat length in meters + 2mm = rope diameter in millimeters. For polypropylene, add a further 4mm.

- Elasticity: A certain elasticity enables the mooring line to absorb shocks and boat movements.

- Strength: The mooring line must resist abrasion, UV rays and load.

- Material: The choice of material (polyester, polyamide, polypropylene) depends on your needs and budget.

The different materials and their characteristics

- Polypropylene: Buoyant, economical, but sensitive to UV and abrasion.

- Polyester: Resistant to UV, abrasion and stretching, but absorbs water and does not float.

- Polyamide: Highly resistant, but more expensive than polyester.

Practical tips for maintaining your mooring lines

- Rinse regularly with fresh water: After each use, especially in salty environments.

- Avoid harsh chemicals: Use a mild detergent if necessary.

- Inspect regularly: Check the condition of fibers and splices

- Replace when in doubt: A worn mooring line can break and cause serious damage.
