The coefficient of friction is the ratio of the sliding force to the holding force produced when two surfaces come into contact. There are several types of friction coefficients and also several formulas to calculate them.

Briefly, there are two types of friction coefficients:

  • The static (or starting) coefficient of friction is the maximum force required to start the sliding motion.
  • The kinetic friction coefficient, also called dynamic friction coefficient, is the force that is measured during the sliding of a mass on a support.
